Tobias, why do we have bones?
"To walk"
Elijah, why do we have bones?
"E-cause we need to bend"
Before I fall asleep each night I find 3 things that I'm thankful for and 3 goals for the next day. I've never been good at remembering my "bedtime prayers" although between the boys and I we do remember that they say theirs. So my little 3 pieces of looking back and 3 pieces of looking forward are my evening prayers.
Where am I going? Reflecting on almost 5 years of having kids around the house, I realized how many evenings I've been thankful for their orbital bones. They have saved us a handful of trips to the ER and made our one trip with Elijah less severe than it could have been. I know this sounds ridiculous. We all have them, along w/a bunch of other stuff. She's grateful for the bones that encase her sons' eyes? (You can tell its spring time w/more bike, scooter, ball, and playground time!)
But that's what kids do. They clarify what is truly amazing and essential. Our bodies are astounding! Carrying a child presently, I just keep thinking back to the millions and millions of women that have carried and nurtured babies to get us to this point. Then I realize I'm more fortunate in health, security, and comfort than probably 99.9% of women that ever lived.
Children may run us ragged, but they slow us down as well. Next time you're talking with a little person, ask them why they have bones. Or any other equally simple and yet wondrous question. Then be prepared to be astounded. Share w/others what you hear!
